Newcastle are Heading to the Champions League

For the first time in 20 years, Newcastle United have qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

After facing off against Leicester City in a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park on Monday evening, 22 May, the Magpies managed to secure themselves a top four spot (third place with 70 points, to be specific) on the English Premier League rankings.

As a result, they’re heading for the Champions League alongside Manchester City, Arsenal and a third team that has yet to be determined – Manchester United and Liverpool are the top two contenders for this spot.

This is the first time since 2003 that Newcastle have qualified for the tournament, a fact that coach Eddie Howe isn’t taking lightly.

“It’s a big relief actually, an amazing night,” Howe said in a post-match interview. “You always hope and you have to dream. But we didn’t feel we were ready for the top four. After last season’s relegation battle, it was whether we could consolidate and become a better team.

“I have to compliment the whole squad because physically it’s been a big demand. They’ve seen the fruits of their own labour.”
